This volume presents the proclamations, special messages, and inauguration speeches of President James K. Polk during his term from 1845 to 1849. Part of an eleven-volume series compiled by Representative James D. Richardson, it preserves the official communications of American presidents for historical reference. The compilation itself became the center of a political controversy over copyrighting public documents, ultimately shaping laws about federal government works.
