This volume preserves Abraham Lincoln's presidential proclamations, messages, and speeches from March 1861 to April 1865. Part of an eleven-volume series spanning 1787 to 1902, it captures the official words of America's sixteenth president during the nation's most turbulent period. The compilation itself sparked the Richardson Affair, a political controversy over copyrighting public documents that changed federal law.
