It follows an unnamed narrator who invents apergy, a form of anti-gravitational energy, and travels to Mars in a spacecraft he names the Astronaut. There he encounters a civilization of small beings who refuse to believe he's from Earth. This groundbreaking work is credited as the first science fiction novel set primarily on Mars and introduces the first documented use of the term "astronaut."
