Christ in Flanders

"Christ in Flanders" by Honoré de Balzac is a short story published in 1831. A mysterious stranger boards a ferry crossing from Cadzand to Ostend, finding welcome only among poor passengers while the wealthy scorn him. When a violent storm threatens to capsize the boat, the stranger's true identity becomes miraculously clear. Years later, a narrator visits a convent built on the site and experiences a haunting vision that challenges his understanding of faith.
