Fanshawe

"Fanshawe" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel published anonymously in 1828. At the fictional Harley College, young Ellen Langton attracts the attention of two students—the robust Edward Walcott and the reclusive intellectual Fanshawe. When a mysterious angler with hidden motives approaches Ellen, a dangerous scheme unfolds that will test loyalty, courage, and self-sacrifice. This debut work, which Hawthorne later tried to suppress, draws from his own college experiences.
