Goody Two-Shoes

"Goody Two-Shoes" by Unknown is a children's story published in 1765. The tale follows Margery Meanwell, a poor orphan girl who possesses only one shoe. When a kind gentleman provides her with a complete pair, her joy leads her to tell everyone about her good fortune. Through virtue and determination, Margery becomes a teacher and eventually marries a wealthy widower. This influential work helped establish children's literature as a genre and popularized the phrase "goody two-shoes" to describe excessively virtuous individuals.
