Lost over Greenland

"Lost over Greenland" by Richard H. Stone is a boys’ aviation adventure novel written in the early 20th century. It centers on young flyer Slim Tyler, his pal Jerry Marbury, and their mentor, ace pilot Dave Boyd, blending record-chasing flights, moral tests, and a brewing feud with a crooked lumberman. When Boyd’s Arctic expedition vanishes, Slim launches a high-stakes rescue in the new plane Hope with Jerry and reporter Dick Mylert. Fast pacing, daring flying scenes, and loyal camaraderie drive the tale. The opening of the novel follows Slim and Jerry in a refueling endurance contest, buoyed by hometown cheers and Dave Boyd’s confidence, until Slim aborts to save a motorist on the tracks—only to find the ungrateful victim is his enemy, Nat Shaley. Back on the ground, a tramp sells Slim the late High Hat Frank’s grimy notebook, hinting Shaley swindled Slim’s father in an Oregon lumber deal and naming leads (Hugh Garrabrant and Cameron Flood). Slim then flies famed surgeon Dr. Aaron Wills to operate on a gravely injured child, sealing the boy’s recovery and showcasing Slim’s character; soon after, he also pulls off a nerve‑racking one‑wheel emergency landing. Meanwhile Dave departs for Greenland without them, Shaley tries to bribe Slim into perjury, and letters reveal Garrabrant dead while Flood’s son has joined the Greenland party. When news breaks that Boyd’s plane is missing, public support equips Slim and Jerry with the Hope; they recruit Dick Mylert and head north, immediately facing fog, a hair‑breadth near‑collision aloft, and the first blows of a snowstorm.
