The following remarks in Reference to this Remarkable and Unique Crinoline from “THE MORNING POST,” of Oct. 10., are respectfully annexed for perusal by our Lady Patronesses:

“The most important, however, of all the improvements made in these
universal articles of clothing is that of Mr. Mickelthwate’s in the
Eastern Annexe, of which the Princess Alice is the patroness. They
are made of very thin Steel Wire, covered with purified Gutta Percha,
and are exceedingly light, elastic, and pliant; unlike most of the
crinolines, the wire is not easily broken, while in the event of
breakage, the outer covering effectually prevents those injuries from
the protrusion of the broken end of the wires which have not
unfrequently been inflicted upon the wearer. It was, we are
informed, from a very serious accident of this sort occurring to an
Austrian Lady that the attention of the exhibitor was first directed
to some mode of covering the sharp steel wires of crinolines, and for
his success he was rewarded with a Silver Medal by the Emperor of
Austria. They are purchased by Thousands at the Exhibition, and the
Inventor seems destined to add to the number of those who have made
large fortunes out of the manufacture of the much abused, oft
deprecated, but still universally worn crinolines.”

“It is an American invention, combining lightness and durability, and
is perfectly indestructible with ordinary wear. The material is the
best Clock Spring Steel, coated with purified Gutta Percha, so highly
refined that they have not the slightest unpleasant smell; they will
bear a good squeeze without getting out of order. They may at all
times be kept perfectly clean by means of a wet sponge. Although so
light they keep their shape well, whether the dress worn with them is
of a thin or heavy material.”—_The Queen_.
