"Sworn to silence" by Mrs. Alex. McVeigh Miller is a novel written in the late 19th century. It blends gothic mystery and romantic melodrama around Aline Rodney, a high-spirited girl who stumbles into the dangerous secrets of her enigmatic neighbor, Oran Delaney, and his “haunted” mansion. As he brings flowers and reads to calm her, the household next door descends into panic: searches spread, her mother falls ill, and the town is gripped by the mystery. A visiting physician, Dr. Anthony, then tells Aline’s sister Effie how a masked stranger abducted him to a grand house to treat a beautiful, unconscious girl who matches Aline’s description, deepening the sense that the truth lies very near yet out of reach.
