"The Divine Comedy by Dante, Illustrated, Purgatory, Volume 5" by Dante Alighieri is a narrative poem begun around 1308 and completed around 1321. This second part of Dante's three-part journey through the afterlife follows the pilgrim as he ascends Mount Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. Here, souls cleanse themselves of the seven deadly sins through penitence, moving through nine rings toward the Garden of Eden at the summit. The poem represents the penitent Christian life in the soul's journey toward God.
