Chapter II: Preface

_This new edition of “The Eighteen Nineties” has been revised and corrected. Here and there notes and sentences have been added for purposes of clarity. In all other respects it resembles the 1913 edition. Through the courtesy of the Proprietors of “Punch” it has been possible to add to the illustrations Mr E. T. Reed’s admirable caricature, “Britannia à la Beardsley.”_
