A furtive figure, Joe Naylor, leads accomplices through hidden stairs and a crypt marked “L D” to recover treasure from an old coffin, only to be spooked by a white apparition before they escape. The household then reels as servants report sightings of a pale lady and threaten to quit, while Count Rossi, skeptical yet unsettled, discovers a concealed door behind damask leading toward the orangery.
