"The penny magazine of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge" is an illustrated British periodical published weekly from 1832 to 1845. Created for working-class readers and sold for just one penny, this ambitious magazine featured wood-engraved illustrations alongside educational articles. It achieved remarkable early success, reaching 200,000 copies in its first year with an estimated readership of nearly one million. However, its dry, non-controversial content and the high cost of producing illustrations eventually challenged its survival in an increasingly competitive market.
