Chapter CXC: Letter CLXXXIX: To Mr. A―――― S――――, at Philadelphia

_Reedy Island, May 22, 1740._
_Dear Mr. S._,

I Desire that you and your wife would accept of these few farewel lines as a token of my love. My heart’s desire and prayer to GOD is, that you both may be saved.――Your wife was mourning when I saw her last. The LORD JESUS prepare her thereby for true, solid, and lasting comfort! The more we are humbled, the more will the glorious Emmanuel exalt us; but we must wait his time. JESUS is love, and never corrects us but for our own good. I find it is always thus with me. I am a stubborn, ungrateful, disobedient child, and often oblige him to strike me severely; but love, I find, holds the rod, and therefore his rod, as well as his staff comforts me.
