"Web of Steel" by Cyrus Townsend Brady and Cyrus Townsend Brady, Jr. is a novel written in the early 20th century. Later, Meade and Helen visit the half-finished span by moonlight; a loose gusset plate suddenly tips and plummets into the river, narrowly missing a steamer, and Meade hauls Helen back from the brink. Shaken, they confess their love. They inform the Colonel, who consents on two conditions: keep the engagement private and make it official only after the bridge is completed. The section closes with both lovers newly bound, their future tied to finishing the great structure.
