Z. Marcas

"Z. Marcas" by Honoré de Balzac is a novelette published in 1840. Set in Paris, it tells the story of a brilliant political strategist who propels politicians to power, only to be abandoned and left destitute. Living in a boarding-house, he befriends two students and shares his views on France's political decline. The tale explores Balzac's belief that mediocre leadership has betrayed talented men and endangered France's youth, while examining his conviction that a person's name shapes their destiny.
