An untested prince, a troubled empire and a blade that moves like a whip form the foundation of Son of Thanjai. Developed by Chennai based Ayelet Studio, the upcoming action adventure draws on Tamil history and culture, placing players in an alternate history version of the eleventh century Chola Empire. Its premise promises a personal journey through a kingdom struggling beneath its grandeur.

At the centre is Vinnendhiran, a nineteen year old prince whose privileged upbringing has left him unprepared for responsibility. Forced beyond the protection of the palace, he encounters people living with the consequences of royal decisions. With enemies threatening the empire and conspiracies surrounding the throne, his journey raises a compelling question: what must someone understand about a kingdom before earning the right to lead it?

Combat centres on the Surul Vaal, a flexible steel weapon capable of sweeping attacks. According to the developers, its movement demands attention to distance and timing, while the fighting system draws inspiration from Kalaripayattu. Enemy morale also matters: defeating a commander or applying relentless pressure can unsettle surrounding soldiers. These proposed systems suggest encounters in which intimidating opponents could be as important as overpowering them.

The setting offers another reason to watch the game. Ayelet describes regions inspired by the Tamil Tinai tradition, including rice plains, forests, coastal trading centres and arid landscapes. Village performances, conversations in toddy shops and everyday crafts are intended to make the world feel inhabited. Such details could give exploration a stronger sense of place, especially if they contribute meaningfully to the prince’s changing understanding of his people.

Language is part of that identity, too. The Steam listing currently includes full Tamil audio, alongside English subtitles and several other text-language options. For players unfamiliar with the setting, this could offer an accessible introduction while preserving the sound of the culture informing the adventure.

Son of Thanjai is targeting spring 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to the studio's latest Gamescom update. Its strongest promise lies in bringing its setting, combat and central character into a coherent experience. Whether those ambitions translate into a polished game remains to be seen, but the premise gives this Tamil/Indian adventure a distinctive identity.
