SPECIFIC CHARACTER.

HEATH, with beardless tips just within the blossoms; blossom two-coloured, viscous, nearly cylindrical, curved, and very handsome; leaves by sixes, and crowded.

DESCRIPTION.

STEM shrubby, upright, a foot high, stout; the larger branches are spreading.

LEAVES in sixes, obtuse, thick and crowded, smooth on their upper and furrowed on their under surface.

FLOWERS are numerous, in single whorls, near the summits of the branches. The foot-stalks are long, coloured, and furnished with three green floral leaves.

EMPALEMENT four-leaved; leaflets egg-shaped, thick, and pressed to the blossom.

BLOSSOM nearly cylindrical, curved, slightly furrowed, shining and viscous, of a deep bright red, but towards the apex green, with the upper part of the segments spreading.

CHIVES eight, capillary; tips beardless, and just within the blossom.

POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped and furrowed. Shaft thread-shaped, and without the blossom. Summit four-cornered.

DESCRIPTION.

STEM upright, two feet high, and hairy; the smaller branches grow by threes in whorls.

LEAVES by threes and fours, linear, straight, blunt, and hairy, flat on their upper surface, and furrowed beneath.

FLOWERS terminate the smaller branches mostly by threes, between spreading and hanging down; footstalks very short, with three floral leaves, lance-shaped, fringed, and pressed to the cup.

EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved; leaflets lance-shaped, fringed, and furrowed.

BLOSSOM cylindrical, an inch long, and green; the segments of the border are obtuse, and upright.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; tips bearded, and within the blossom.

POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped, and furrowed. Shaft thread-shaped, and just without the blossom. Summit four-cornered.

DESCRIPTION.

STEM shrubby, a span high, upright, and branching; the smaller branches are numerous, and between erect and spreading.

LEAVES by fours, linear, smooth, thickish, shining, and spreading, footstalks very short.

FLOWERS sit close in upright bunches, by fours, on the ends of the branches, scarce any footstalks.

EMPALEMENT four-leaved, the leaflets at the base are broadly egg-shaped, and toothed, sharp-pointed above; there are three floral leaves, awl-shaped, channelled, and pressed to the cup.

BLOSSOM swelled out, and flesh-coloured, narrowed at the mouth, the segments are nearly heart-shaped, waved, spreading, and very large.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, tips beardless, and within the blossom.

POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped, and slightly furrowed. Shaft thread-shaped. Summit four-cornered.

STEM shrubby, branching. Large and small branches are roughly haired, and between erect and spreading.

LEAVES by threes, of a mealy green, bowed, turned inwards, prickly, and deeply furrowed; footstalks pressed to the branches.

FLOWERS terminate the small branches in umbels, mostly by threes; footstalks prickly, and furnished with three prickly floral leaves.

EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved; leaflets egg-shaped, prickly, and of a pale green.

BLOSSOM pitcher-shaped, purple and sweet-scented; the segments of the border are roundish and nearly upright.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; tips bearded and just within the blossom.

HEATH, with tips two-horned at the base, within the blossom: shaft just without: flowers terminal: peduncles very long: blossoms white, flask-shaped, and clammy: leaves by threes, three-sided, and awl-shaped.

DESCRIPTION.

STEM a foot high, upright: branches long, and nearly simple.

LEAVES by threes, three-sided, awl-shaped, and straight, with a mucronated point flat on the upper surface, and keeled beneath.

FLOWERS terminate the branches in umbels of five to ten flowers, with very long red footstalks, spreading or nodding.

EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved: leaflets lance-shaped, carinated, sharp-pointed, and viscous.

BLOSSOM white, flesh-coloured at the base, and extremely glutinous, an inch long, and shining, cylindrical on the upper part, and swelled out at the base, narrowed at the mouth, with the segments spreading, and nearly egg-shaped.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, very slender and twisted: tips two-horned at the base, pointed at the end, and within the blossom.

POINTAL. Seed-bud egg-shaped, and furrowed. Shaft thread-shaped, and just without the blossom. Summit four-cornered.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; tips crested, and within the blossom.

LEAVES by threes, wedge-shaped, flat on their upper surface, rolled back at the edges, and woolly.

FLOWERS terminate the extremity of the branches by fours, pressed together, are nodding and spreading, with very short footstalks.

EMPALEMENT. Cup double; the outer three-leaved, the inner four-leaved; the leaflets are ovate, concave, and turned inwards, covered by a thick wool, and pressed to the blossom.

BLOSSOM nearly globular, whitish, woolly, and nearly hid within the cup.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, inserted into the receptacle; tips beardless, and just without the blossom.

POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped, woolly on the upper part. Shaft thread-shaped. Summit four-cornered.

DESCRIPTION.

A DWARF shrub, but stoutish, scarcely a foot high, erect, with chiefly simple, scarcely spreading branches.

LEAVES in threes, in distinct whorls, a little bent downwards, lanately-ciliated, and furrowed beneath.

FLOWERS in the bosoms of the leaves, often solitary, nearly sessile, at first nodding, finally cernuous.

EMPALEMENT double, outer the smallest, 3-leaved, with the leaflets close-pressed to the blossom, egg-shaped, acute, outwardly convex, keeled, and woolly: interior four-leaved, with the leaflets as in the exterior one, but above twice as large.

BLOSSOM four-cleft, large, egg-shaped, acutish, inflated, woolly, of a dingy yellow-white, purply-brownish at the base, with the segments egg-lance-shaped, converging, and obtuse.

CHIVES eight, hair-like, broader at the base, 4 interior upright, 4 exterior very much bent; tips bearded, within the blossom.

STEM shrubby, short, stout, and a little flexuose, rough from the cicatrices of the leaves; the branches thickly covered with leaves, numerous, rather whorled, spreading, and expanded, with ascending points.

LEAVES chiefly in sixes, very crowded, linear, an inch long, furrowed beneath, the older ones recurved, but beyond the middle incurvedly ascending.

FLOWERS whorled near the ends of the branches in an horizontal direction; footstalks coloured, and hispid; with three rough-haired floral leaves.

EMPALEMENT four-leaved; leaflets are linear, awl-shaped, harshly haired, and pressed to the blossom.

BLOSSOM tubular, ribbed, an inch long, and closely beset with glandular hairs, white towards the end and red at the base; the segments of the border are rolled back, and slightly notched.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; tips just within the blossom, and beardless.

POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped and woolly. Shaft thread-shaped, just without the blossom. Summit four-cornered.

Native of the Cape of Good Hope.

Flowers from May till July.
