HEATH, with tips two-horned at the base, and just without the blossom: flowers grow from the axillæ of the leaves, are pitcher-shaped, and purple: footstalks long: leaves by threes, spathula-shaped, and glandular: branches numerous, and flexuose.

DESCRIPTION.

STEM shrubby, a foot and a half high: the smaller and larger branches are numerous, flexuose, and between erect and spreading.

LEAVES by threes, spathula-shaped, flat on their upper surface, keeled beneath, and whitish: with glandular margins rolled back.

FLOWERS grow near the ends of the branches, singly, from the axillæ of the leaves: footstalks long, coloured, and glandular.

EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved: leaflets ovately-pointed, with revolute glandular margins.

BLOSSOM pitcher-shaped, smooth, and purple: the segments of the border are obtuse, and upright.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads: tips two-horned at the base, and just within the blossom.

LEAVES by fours, linear, pointed, with a recurved base and an ascending point, ciliated, and shining.

FLOWERS terminate the branches in bunches: footstalks purple, and furnished with two small opposite floral leaves at their base.

EMPALEMENT four-leaved: leaflets lance-shaped, pointed, and pressed to the blossom.

BLOSSOM large, swelled, of an ovate form, smooth, and shining; narrowed at the mouth, which is of a pale flesh-colour: the segments of the border are equal, spreading, flesh-coloured, and of a deep red in the centre.

FLOWERS sessile, upright, fastigiate, and terminating the branches by fours and fives.

EMPALEMENT. Cup double; the outer one is three-leaved, with awl-shaped leaflets and hairy margins; the inner one is four-leaved, with longer leaflets.

BLOSSOM bellied, pellucid, narrowed at the mouth, which is ornamented like a cowslip; the segments of the border are heart-shaped, spreading, and white, of a bright red on the under side.

CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; tips beardless, within the blossom.

POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped, furrowed, with honey-cups at their base. Shaft just within the blossom. Summit just without, and four-cornered.

FLOWERS grow at the extremity of the smaller branches, mostly by threes, hanging down. The footstalks are long, of a red colour, with three small floral leaves pressed to them.

EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved. Leaflets broadly egg-shaped, furrowed, and covered with long white hairs: the edges of the cup are of a bright green colour.

BLOSSOM pitcher-shaped, hairy, and white; the segments of the border are obtuse, and upright.
