ELIAS LEVITA (1468-1549), Hebrew grammarians,
teachers of Hebrew to Christians. Introduction of
Hebrew studies into German and French universities
through the efforts of Egidio de Viterbo,

1581. Gregory XIII forbids the employment of Jewish
physicians, re-ordains the confiscation of Hebrew

1586. Sixtus V permits Jews in the Papal States and the
